What is the gospel?

The gospel is the most important news in the world. It is the news concerning God’s plan to rescue us from out biggest problem: sin. ‘Sin’ details the fallenness of our nature, and the way in which we fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Sin permeates every part of us: our thoughts and our actions. Most importantly, sin disqualifies us from heaven. God cannot look upon wickedness, as He is altogether good (Habakkuk 1:13) – we, on the other hand, are not. Nothing impure can enter heaven, and as we are constantly thinking evil thoughts and doing selfish deeds, we cannot enter heaven ourselves. We need someone who is pure to let us in. This is where Jesus comes in. A man, a real man who lived 2000 years ago on this very planet, and He was perfect (1 Peter 2:22)! If entrance into heaven was based on merit and goodness, He alone would be there. But this was not why He came, He did not come in order to show us how bad we are, rather He came to rescue us from our sin. He came to ransom lost sinners to Himself: He came to be our Saviour (1 Timothy 1:15)! All we need to do, is believe (Acts 16:31). Believe that Jesus is who He says He is, the Son of God, believe that He lived a perfect life, died a death that He did not deserve, was buried, and rose again on the 3rd day, defeating death, the devil, and rescuing us from hell, which is the punishment we deserve. Christ rescues us into relationship with God, and the promise of heaven is the promise of an eternity in a place with no more sin, no more death, no more war, no more famine, no more injustice, no more tears! All will be made perfect and spotless, for an eternity! There is an eternity to come beyond the grave, it is vital that we recognise this. Are you right with God?
